Washington, DC
(May 2, 2006) - AeA, the nation’s largest trade association representing all
segments of the high-tech industry, today announced its support of the “SKIL
Bill”, introduced by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) to reform both the H-1B visa and
employment-based (EB visa) green card processes. The legislation is co-sponsored
by Senators Allard (R-CO), Allen (R-VA), Bennett (R-UT), Enzi (R-WY), and Lott
(R-MS).
“By introducing this bill, Senator Cornyn has demonstrated an understanding of
the positive impact that highly-educated foreign nationals have on the U.S.
economy,” said William T. Archey, President & CEO, AeA. “The provisions in this
bill will go a long way to helping America keep its competitive edge with
respect to the rest of the world.”
Current H-1B and EB visa policies have stifled the ability of talented foreign
nationals to come into and stay in this county, undercutting the competitiveness
of U.S. firms and therefore impeding growth. The jobs and wealth that have been
created by these individuals, benefiting our economy for years, will now be
enjoyed by those countries with less stringent immigration regulations. If the
best talent in the world finds it too difficult to get into our country, they
will turn to our overseas competitors, creating a true threat to our economic
and national security.
