Puerto Rico’s Tech Exports Increase by $118 Million in 2007
High-Tech Exports from Puerto Rico Have Growth Five Years Straight

Orlando, FL  (September 23, 2008) – AeA, the nation’s largest technology trade association representing all segments of the high-tech industry, today released its annual report detailing national and state trends in the international trade of high-tech goods. The report, Trade in the Cyberstates 2008: A State-by-State Overview of High-Tech International Trade, covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Since 2002, high-tech goods exports from Puerto Rico have risen every year, reaching $3.0 billion in 2007. Seventeen percent of all exports from Puerto Rico were high-tech products in 2007 and almost half of those were computers and peripheral equipment – $1.4 billion. Puerto Rico’s largest export destination is the Dominican Republic, followed by Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

“Puerto Rico has seen a remarkable five straight years of growth in high-tech exports,” said Maryann Fiala, Executive Director of AeA’s Florida Council which includes Puerto Rico. “These exports support 10,000 jobs in Puerto Rico. We want to keep these growth trends going. That means that Commonwealth leaders need to continue to pursue policies that maintain Puerto Rico as a business friendly environment. And it means U.S. officials need to keep working to open new foreign markets to high-tech exports.”

Nationally, Trade in the Cyberstates 2008 shows that U.S. high-tech goods exports decreased by three percent in 2007, totaling $214 billion, representing 18 percent of all U.S. exports to the world. High-tech imports totaled $333 billion in 2007, up by three percent, resulting in a high-tech trade deficit of $118 billion. High-tech exports supported 894,600 jobs in the United States.
