Santa Clara, CA (August 21, 2008) — AeA, the
nation’s largest high-tech trade association representing all segments of the
high-tech industry, announced today that Timothy Guertin, President and CEO of
Varian Medical Systems, Inc., has received the seventh annual AeA/Stanford
Executive Institute Award for Outstanding Achievement by an alumnus. The award
is given annually to a graduate of the AeA/Stanford Executive Institute who has
made significant contributions to the high-tech industry and in his/her
community. Mr. Guertin received the award at the 33rd Annual AeA/Stanford
Executive Institute Awards Dinner at Stanford University on Wednesday, August
20.
“Tim is a true luminary in the medical device industry, and under his
leadership, Varian continues to thrive as the world leader in the manufacturing
of medical devices for cancer treatment,” said Elaine Sanders, AeA’s Senior Vice
President, Financial Conferences, Executive Education and Affinity Programs. “We
are proud to honor Tim as an alumnus of the Institute, and for his continued
support of AeA over the years.”
Mr. Guertin attended the Institute in 1988 as a service manager for Varian’s
Radiation Group.
Since beginning his career at Varian in 1976, Mr. Guertin has served in several
key management positions during his 32-year tenure. He served as President and
COO from 2005-2006, and became the company's President and CEO in February 2006.
Previously, Mr. Guertin was General Manager and President of Varian’s Oncology
Systems business from 1990-2005. While managing Varian Oncology Systems, he was
named Corporate Vice President in 1992,and Executive Vice President in 1999.
Prior to becoming head of Varian Oncology Systems, he held a variety of
positions, including General Manager of customer support between 1982 and 1989.
Mr. Guertin is the past Chairman of the Board of Directors of AeA, and is on the
Board of the Medical Imaging and Technology Association, part of the National
Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). He holds a Bachelor of Science
degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of
California at Berkeley.
The AeA/Stanford Executive Institute combines the expertise and resources of AeA
and the world-renowned Stanford University Department of Management Science and
Engineering. Since 1975, more than 3,400 alumni have completed the intense
2-week executive development program at Stanford University.
