Washington, DC (July 16, 2008) – AeA, the
nation’s largest technology trade association representing all segments of the
high-tech industry, today released its third Competitiveness Series report
endorsing eHealth, arguing that it will lower costs and enhance the safety,
reliability, convenience, and delivery of healthcare. The report, entitled
eHealth 301: Electronic Prescriptions, builds on two earlier reports analyzing
electronic medical records and telemedicine.
“The high-tech industry is a strong supporter of eHealth initiatives such as
ePrescribing that lower healthcare costs and improve the safety and delivery of
care,” said Matthew Kazmierczak, Vice President, Research and Industry Analysis,
AeA. “We were pleased to see that ePrescribing was a key piece of the Medicare
Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, which overwhelmingly passed
through Congress yesterday. Now we need to ensure that policymakers at the state
level help promote ePrescribing and that medical practices across the country
embrace the technology.”
If all Medicare prescriptions were transmitted electronically by 2010, federal
health expenditures could be reduced by up to $29 billion over the next decade,
according to The Gorman Health Group. While the use of ePrescribing systems has
increased dramatically over the last several years, only two percent of all
prescriptions were transmitted electronically in 2007.
