AeA
scholarship total reaches 28 – all-time high
Twenty eight Oregon high school seniors have been named recipients of
the prestigious AeA Technology Scholarship that will enable them to attend
public universities in Oregon, beginning this fall. In additional to
financial support, each scholar receives 1-on-1 mentoring by an industry
professional and the opportunity to apply for an internship at some of the
state's top technology companies.
Seven high-technology corporations— Barco Medical Imaging, First Tech
Credit Union, FORTiX LLC, FRYE Electronics Inc., Hewlett Packard, InFocus
Corp., and Intel Corp.--sponsored this year's AeA Technology Scholarship
Awards which are administered by the Oregon University System (OUS). Award
winners are eligible for an annual renewable scholarship of $2,500, or
$10,000 over a 4-year period while enrolled at an OUS institution.
Intel Corp. initiated the scholarship program in 1999, and it was
adopted by AeA Oregon Council the following year. Since then, 162
scholarships valued at more than $1.62 million have been awarded through
2003-2005.
The goal of the scholarship program is to entice outstanding local high
school students to stay in Oregon and study for technical degrees.
Scholarship majors include: Computer Science, Chemical, Computer,
Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics,
Physics, and Chemistry.

Legislature
makes progress on budget – industry priorities intact
Salem
lawmakers this month released outlines of the budget
priorities for the Democratic Senate and the Republican House.
Major difference in the two budgets is the total for K-12 public
school support. The Senate put
$5.325 billion in its budget for schools; the House had the target at
$5.175 billion. The
Governor’s budget released at the beginning of the year only had $5.0
billion. State revenues are
rising due to the economic recovery, and there is a little more money than
earlier thought. Both budgets
had the same total at the bottom line and don’t rely upon new taxes.
Legislators will jockey over the next several weeks on how to sort
out this zero sum game.
On
key issues for AeA, lawmakers strongly supported continuation of funding
for the Engineering and Technology Industry Council efforts to enhance
state engineering and computer science programs, and also expressed
support for increased funding for the Oregon Nanoscience and
Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) that was started in 2003.
On other fronts, AeA is tracking corporate tax issues,
environmental regulations, proposals to limit outsourcing, and
labor-workplace rules.
